KEZER Architecture developed a concept design of 28 prefabricated semi-detached houses for Herning, Denmark. The aim of the project was to create affordable prefabricated housing units with durable and long-lasting materials. The houses were planned to increase the prefabricated housing quality and comfort while reducing the building costs. Four prefabricated units come together and create a semi-detached house. The units are attached to each other on site mechanically. After completion of installation of the units, brick external skin is erected on site which covers and protects the Internal structure from strong weather conditions of Herning. The steel structure of the units allows for large openings on the facades which connects the internal space with the surrounding garden. Correct orientation of the houses ensures that every room gets minimum 3 hours of direct sun light. Sustainably developed site uses only 40% of the plot for the building, the rest of the area is left for green areas and service roads. With indoor environmental qualities, green roof, storm water collecting strategies and environmentally friendly material choices makes the project a very nature- and user-friendly settlement for Herning.
