Cambridge Sports Hall concept was developed in accordance with the client’s need for a temporary multifunctional sports hall on the Cambridge Skolkovo territory. The idea of the project was to design a fully demountable and transportable building. In the Russian market 1m2 façade building cost with insulation, at the time of the project development, was more than 1 m2 of container façade area. It resulted in a decision to use containers as an exterior skin for the sports hall. Containers of different sizes are stacked on top of each other which creates the external envelope with large windows to get direct but controlled daylight with the help of the approx. 2m depth of the units. Two 40’’ high ceiling shipping containers are attached to each other to create large spaces for changing rooms, a music room, office spaces and a multifunctional room in the south entrance part. The rest of the containers are used as storage areas and corridors to reach small internal balconies where sports hall can be seen from different perspectives. On the ground floor level, the containers are covered with timber panels to control the acoustic levels of the hall and reduce the cold metal feeling. These timber panels also help to hide some different supporting function behind, such as a performance stage and seating platforms.
